The materials

I have just placed the largest order in the history of my account. Largest in the monetary sense rather than a spatial feature, since silver, per its properties such as density, is per natural rather small item. I know actually for a fact, that for most jewellers, my order would be just a “spit in the ocean”. But for me, it is a big thing. I have always operated on a small budget, buying silver and stones gradually as I found money here and there. It is one of the reasons why I’ve always been so slow in making new items. But not this time. My heart is still jumping between my stomach and my throat unsure whether it is terrified or excited. It is finally happening!

Originally, I thought I would make the entire collection in fine silver, pure silver without any added metals. I love fine silver, it feels a bit softer and shines differently, but there is a reason why most jewellery is made in sterling (which is an alloy of 925parts of fine silver and 75parts of other metal, usually copper) it makes the final pieces more durable. In the end, I decided on a compromise. Some items are going to be made of fine silver and those more exposed, such as rings or clasps, in sterling. I think I made peace with my decision and I can’t wait to get my hands dirty.

I know I don’t speak enough about this. I love working with metals not only because they are pretty, but also because they can be melted and recycled again and again. From the perspective of sustainable materials, it is one of those, that don’t lose their properties over time. All silver I buy is labelled eco silver which means there is no newly mined metal in the alloy. It is all re-purposed, refined and recycled. What a luxury! This wasn’t at all available just about ten years ago. I think it is a good time to acknowledge, that the industry is moving in the right direction, even though it can feel a little bit slow.

Anyhow. My little silver parcel is due to arrive on Friday and I will absolutely let you know as soon as it knocks on my door!
